Byron Bay Surf Festival 2012. Belly boards & alaia odyssey

Imagen
T om Wegener has been at the center of the alaia movement. “Tom Wegener’s odyssey with the rebirth of the alaia has led down a path back in history that gets bigger and more travelled the further back it goes.  Tom  will discuss the vibrant belly board movement that went around the world 100 years ago. The little wood body board has been the centre of surfing for a very long time.  Now, with the discovery of Paulownia wood we can make really good belly boards and experience this super fun style of surfing.  Then Tom will discuss the more in depth aqua dynamics of the alaia and how flex, edges and gentle curves work together to hold the wood into a steep wave’s face.” http://www.byronbaysurffestival.com/portfolio/belly-boards-alaia-odyssey-by-tom-wegener/

Alaia by Hydrodinamica

Alaia from Hydrodynamica on Vimeo . The alaia was the high performance surfboard of ancient Hawaii. While smaller paipo-type boards were common throughout Oceana, they were rarely large enough to stand up on and were usually surfed prone or while kneeling. Riding while standing set Hawaiian surfing apart, and the alaia was the board that allowed for the most expressive and creative stand up surfing. A true Hawaiian alaia would be made under traditional Hawaiian ritual in Hawaii. The boards used in the Hydrodynamica Project are alaia-inspired, they are not true Hawaiian alaias. That being said, these alaia-inspired boards, built and designed by Jon Wegener, illustrate the amazing performance capabilities of this ancient Hawaiian design.

Non to say its a very environmental friendly board. It comes from plantation grown trees, often organi- cally grown. Manufacturing uses a minimal amount of fossil energy and the glue used by Hiddenwood is based on natural by products. The craftmanship behind the shape of an Alaia is of maximum importance. Each...
